| With recent events after Hurricane Katrina, I have been
reminded of the importance of being read in any emergency. Amateur radio
operators can do a fantastic job providing communication in an emergency
area, as well as messages going in and out of the area. Amateur radio
operators have the ability to help best in the area of
communications.
It is very important that Amateur radio club groups work to train
those operators who want to learn the correct procedures for emergency
communications. We not only need to know the proper way to handle
emergency traffic, we need to be trained and refreshed on participating
in emergency nets. Although we want to help during an emergency, we can
cause more harm to a net instead of helping, without proper
training.
Amateur radio are the nations resource of radio operators in an
emergency. This is the original concept of licensing Amateur Radio
Operators to use the radio airwaves. Amateur radio operators with their
portable stations, and emergency power capabilities.
Getting us started, I recommend those interested in emergency
communications to take time to learn the International Phonetic
Alphabet, if you do not know it already.
